Brussels urges US to honor trade commitments

The European Commission has called on the United States to clarify its future trade strategy, following last week’s US Supreme Court decision and President Donald Trump's subsequent comments about imposing new global tariffs. In Brussels, officials stressed that all existing agreements between the parties remain in force and must be strictly observed.
In an official statement, the Commission invoked the maxim "a deal is a deal," directly urging Washington to meet its trade obligations. The comment came in response to Mr. Trump’s proposal to set a worldwide tariff at 15% in place of the previous 10%, which had been challenged in court. Brussels said it was seriously concerned that abrupt legal and political maneuvers of this kind could erode the legal foundations of transatlantic relations.
EU representatives said the bloc remained committed to constructive dialogue but warned of the risks. Brussels argues that unpredictability in US tariff policy creates critical uncertainty for businesses and destabilizes global supply chains. The Commission added that it expects fair and balanced trading conditions to be maintained while both sides assess the implications of the court ruling.
The European Union and the United States remain each other’s largest trading partners. In that context, political clarity on tariffs is considered critical. Officials in Brussels are seeking to prevent a breakdown in current negotiations and to avoid a new round of full‑scale trade tensions that could threaten economic growth on both sides of the Atlantic.
